About Me

Hello! I am Steve Schuler

The year 2013 was the most emotional and critical part of my journey with the one I love. We cried and held each other tight, knowing life is about today, not the uncertainty of tomorrow. We laughed and shared stories; we bared our souls and unveiled our deepest thoughts and fears. We talked about the day we first met and how fate kept us together. I cannot imagine a greater love or a more loving woman.

Linda and I began writing our story during the summer of 2012. It is a non-fiction novel about two kids coming of age and finding love. I want to share that story—the good and the bad—with family, and friends. I hope these writings will give insight into what shaped our destiny, and how we became inseparable and forever in love.

"What a terrific book. A great beach read. A beautiful memoir. I very much enjoyed reading the author’s story of true love. Their’s was a perfect love in a imperfect world. Love as it should be."

Steve Schuler has written an amazing memoir. As an author of three memoirs myself, I am drawn to the genre. I read many memoirs before I started writing to get a sense of voice and style. Cliches derive from truth and Steve's book made me laugh and cry, feel sadness and hope, but ultimately joy in the celebration of the human experience. Being around ten years younger than Steve, his stories and images resonated with me, especially the background of the Vietnam War. Steve hid behind the tough exterior of being a muscle car head greaser. There were still Greasers around in the 70s when I went to high high school, in addition to Disco Boys, Heads and Jocks. Our older brothers went away to war. Steve's writing style is simple, straightforward, yet deeply visual and poetic. The striking images and feelings are strongly connected by the dialogue that can only come from real experience. I felt the anger and rage from his abusive childhood and share the cloak of functional alcoholism the permeated the generations of his family. His journal entries between chapters, in which he and his wife, Linda, who was dying from cancer at the time, document the writing process in a way I have not previously encountered. I felt their desperation from a blossoming love, almost snuffed out by a high school pregnancy and desperately hoped they would succeed as they struggled under their circumstances. They succeeded in a profound expression of love for each other, life and family. I am blessed to have discovered this book and hope that Steve reads this review.

A Hidden Gem. A Truly Amazing Memoir

I loved this memoir. I am almost the same age as the author and lived through many similar circumstances. High School was torturous in many ways, not the least of which was asking girls out on dates. The Vietnam War and the protests against it are a familiar backdrop for me. Steve's story of Ryan and Lilla is so much more than any of those phases of life, this story goes to the heart of how difficult it can be to create and build a family. There are so many things that work against any success in that endeavor. Ryan and Lilla are archetypes of so many teens in many decades. Fabulous story and good writing!

An amazing read!

Rock Paper Innocence is a uniquely written memoir in voice and style, pulling you into the authors world of personal growth as he learns to love and be loved. It is fast paced, emotional, and at times humorous. Netflix should grab this story and turn it into a miniseries. This author also published a short story about racing sailboats. It’s a real nailbiter. Both are great reads, and I strongly recommend.

Truly a great read.

If you are lucky enough to find true love as devoted as the couple in this book, then you are among the fortunate few. Wonderfully written, both joyful and sorrowful, you will be consumed by both emotions. To have the chance at love again after loss is something we all hope for. Only a lucky few get that chance. This is a must read!
